Microcirculation is the flow of blood through the body's smallest blood vessels, called microvessels, which are embedded in tissues and organs. Microvessels include arterioles, venules, capillaries, and post-capillary venules. The primary function of the microcirculation is to supply oxygen and nutrients to myocardial tissue, and it also has an important role in regulating coronary blood flow. Some 70-90% of the overall peripheral resistance of the circulatory system arises at the level of the microcirculation.
