Nutrition Intervention

Did You Know?

According to NCBI, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome between January 2022 and February 2023 was 63.3%.  Men were more likely to have the syndrome than women, with 52.5% of men and 47.5% of women having it.  The prevalence of metabolic syndrome also increased with age, from 6.7% for people aged 20–29 to 43.5% for people aged 60–69 and 42.0% for people aged 70 and older.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. These conditions include increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

Understanding the Paradox of Insulin Resistance

Insulin resistance has proven to be one of the biggest problems in treating patients with metabolic disease syndrome.  Insulin is an essential hormone produced by the body. It affects many aspects of your health such as metabolism, weight gain, aging, and brain wellness.

Insulin also enables the transfer of glucose present in the blood into your cells.  This provides cells with the energy they need to operate.  Insulin resistance is a phenomenon where the glucose in your blood is unable to enter cells, despite normal or high levels of insulin present.

Unhealthy eating habits, unbalanced diets, lack of physical activity, sleep, and stress can affect the performance of insulin and cause an increase in glucose levels.
The excess glucose ends up getting stored as fat which leads to weight gain, pre-diabetes, Type II Diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and is a risk factor for cognitive loss.  People with insulin resistance are also more prone to stress, anxiety, food cravings, fatigue, brain fog, and insomnia.

Metabolic syndrome is also known as insulin resistance syndrome. It’s common in the United States, affecting about one in three adults. Many of the signs associated with metabolic syndrome are caused by lifestyle factors, such as diet, activity, and sleep, but genetic factors may also play a role.

Culinary Wellness

Chronic metabolic disease syndromes are characterized by an imbalance in blood sugar, fatty liver, altered lipids, high blood pressure, and obesity.  Genetic constituents; high fat and high-energy dietary habits; a sedentary lifestyle; sleep deprivation; prenatal nutrition (malnutrition); and stress, are all major contributing factors to pre-diabetes and Type II Diabetes.

Wellness Academy USA Nutrition Intervention Program is design to mediate, and in many cases, reverse chronic metabolic disease syndromes.  We use data from anthropological studies of modern-day hunter-gatherer-forager populations (i.e. Tsimané); Blue Zone regions from around the world with high concentration of centenarians; clinical studies that support the Mediterranean diet; and additional clinical studies such as the Adventist Health Study 2, to create the healthiest evidence-based meals and physical activity plans.

Our meals plans & recipes improve the gut microbiome by increasing prebiotic healthy bacteria to boost disease prevention and brain wellness.  A substantial body of research confirms the important role the gut microbiota plays in preventing, and possible reversing chronic metabolic disease, including arthritis, bone loss, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, obesity, and diseases of the mind.

The Inspiration Behind Meal Plans

Wellness Academy USA uses data from anthropological studies, blue zones, the Mediterranean diet and other clinical nutrition studies to design pathways to guide, empower and drive lifestyle change to improve manmade syndromes – arthritis, heart disease, type II diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and diseases of the mind – by emphasizing a return to a more ancient pre-Neolithic organic diet, and a more physically active lifestyle that enables our ancient genome to thrive.

We measure and quantify our program through the following biomarkers/biometrics: 1) total cholesterol; 2) triglycerides; 3) HDL/LDL ratio; 4) blood sugar AIC levels; 5) weight/BMI/waist circumference risk; 6) blood pressure; 7) waist-to-hip ratio; 8) an increase in physical activity levels, tracking steps, with gate speed daily (8k-10K steps daily;  9) sustained high-quality sleep (7-8 hours); and 10) positive mindset (stress reduction & mindfulness assessments, via happiness index).

These goals are feasible, safe, and effective for reducing the risk of chronic metabolic disease. They are achievable through a variety of modalities, including digitally-based intervention and behavioral strategies using board-certified health & wellness coaching with medical oversight.
